Impulse is derived from Newton’s second law:

$F = m a = m \left( \frac{v - u}{t} \right) = \frac{mv - mu}{t}$

Thus:

$Ft = mv - mu$

Impulse equals the change in momentum.
Impulse is the product of force and time.
